For this project I was the audio engineer for the Vocalist recording. It was a single three hour session with the talent and director.
This short film is based on an event that actually happened in a coal mine in the U.S. The director decided to collaborate with a composer who created this amazing folk song to pair with the visuals.
As a part of the composition, a voice talent was hired. The set up for this was very different than a usual ADR recording set up. I only had access to a narration room at the time and because of this I actually recorded the talent at least four-five times in different positions in the room to gauge where the best position in the room could be for recording singing.
Once we recorded the main lyrics of the song the director didn't think it was enough against the heavy instrumental background. So, as a test we had the vocalist create a second layer of her voice, harmonizing with herself, at different points to make certain places stronger. This ended up being a success so we created two additional vocal layers to the original lyrics.
It was the first time engineering a session with a vocalist but it was a great experience.
